Our own experience shows that semi-solid and engineered flooring are the most popular types – bringing most of our revenues from these sources. If the budget allows, we always suggest customers purchase semi-solid flooring as it is more majestic, has a greater thickness to allow more sanding times and feels more overall exclusive. Remember, these will be years that you are going to be walking on your flooring, hence, try to spoil yourselves because you really deserve it.

Solid Wood Flooring

  • Every plank is made of solid wood (milled from a single piece of timber)
  • Planks are usually 18–20 mm thick
  • Can be installed by nailing the planks to the wooden base or glued to the underlay
  • Due to plank’s thickness can be sanded and refinished more times than semi-solid or engineered flooring
  • Usually less expensive than semi-solid
  • Not recommended to install directly over concrete, to use with under floor heating or as floating floors
    • Floating floors phrase means that flooring planks are attached to each other by their tongues and grooves but not connected (nailed or glued) in any way to the sub-floor. Therefore, it is said that such floors float as if logs on water and flooring feels ‘alive’ when walking on it. In our decade long flooring practice we had only two customers who wanted floating floors. Eventually, one of the two asked us to redo the flooring and glue it down to the sub-floor.


Solid wood floor


Semi Solid Wood Flooring

  • Semi–solid planks are different from solid ones and usually are 20 mm thick
  • Instead of being milled from a single piece of timber it is constructed/ glued from two parts:
    • Bottom part or the plank’s base – is usually 14-15 mm thick and is made from multiple layers of water-resistant birch or other softwood and are glued together in opposing directions
    • Top part or the plank’s upper layer is usually made from 5-6 mm hardwood such as oak (this top layer of the plank may also be called veneer)
  • Suitable for under floor heating
  • Most of the customers these days buy semi–solid or engineered

Engineered Wood Flooring

  • Engineered flooring planks are similar to semi-solid by the way the planks are constructed but the planks themselves are thinner averaging 15 mm of thickness in total
    • Bottom part or plank’s base – most commonly is made from softwoods but not multi-layered birch plywood
    • Top part or the plank’s upper layer is usually made from 3-4 mm hardwood such as oak
  • We install this flooring by gluing it down or in floating manner. Engineered is too thin to nail it down
  • Suitable with under floor heating
  • Normally can be sanded and refinished once or max twice in their lifetimes due to thin upper layer of the plank
  • Most often is cheaper in the market than semi-solid due to less expensive materials used in manufacturing


Engineered wood floor

  • Laminate, vinyl and veneer floors are often confused with engineered wood floors. Laminate uses an image of wood on its surface, vinyl is a plastic formed to look like wood, and veneer uses a thin layer of wood with a core that could be one of a number of different composite wood products (most commonly, high density fibreboard)


Parquet Wood Flooring

  • Parquet is available in blocks, most commonly in 20mm thickness with a variety of lengths (230 – 600 mm) and face widths of 60 mm to 100 mm
  • In certain circumstances blocks can be manufactured to special sizes
  • The ageless classic beauty of a parquet floor reflects the very best of traditional flooring techniques
  • Parquet blocks can be laid in a variety of patterns that will reflect your lifestyle as well as complimenting their surroundings
